As a York St John University student, you automatically become a
member of the Students’ Union. For just £10 you can purchase your
NUS Extra card, which is your key to a variety of discounts both
online and in high street stores nationally and will give you
access to all the services the Students’ Union provides. This
includes support, representation, advice, personal development,
recreation, clubs and societies, entertainments, the newly
refurbished Archies Bar, the Essentials shop and Fresh coffee bar.
Student life is about working hard and playing hard, and the
Students’ Union strives to help you get the right balance.
The Students’ Union is a democratic organisation, run by elected
students for students. It is our mission to promote and represent
the interests of our members, enriching the student experience. We
are a large and diverse organisation reflecting the student
population we aim to represent. We seek to ensure that all of our
members including mature and part-time students, students with
disabilities, lesbian, gay and bisexual, and ethnic minority
students have equal opportunities to get involved.
Students’ Union officers are elected each year to represent the
interests of its members at each and every level – within the
Students’ Union structure at various York St John committees, and
within the NUS at a local and national level.
Whatever your age, background or culture, coming here is the
best opportunity you will ever have to broaden your horizons. Being
a student at York St John will drive your development no end, both
academically and personally, and we urge you to make the most of
your time here. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and

Get involved…
The Students’ Union runs a wide variety of initiatives,
teams and campaigns that you can get involved in. You could join
RAG (Raise & Give) and help to make money for various
charities, or perhaps get involved with the Ents team and help
coordinate the entertainments the SU provides. If you want to help
students get the best from their course, you could even become a
Programme Rep. The ways to get involved are endless, and whatever
you’re into, the Students’ Union seeks to make sure that it is
provided for. If it isn’t, mention it to any of the elected
officers and we’ll do our best to make it happen. You never know,
you could set up your own collective, club or society and help
enrich the experience of other students at York St John.
Sports &
Societies
The Students’ Union supports a whole range of student-run clubs
and societies, increasing in number and diversity every year. We
offer everything from dance to rugby and cheerleading to snow
sports. If we’re not offering what you’re looking for, all you need
is ten like-minds to start up your very own club or society!

The Students’ Union runs a variety of commercial services.
The Essentials shop, Fresh coffee bar, Archies Bar and a world of
entertainments are all very much at the heart of what we do.
We encourage you to use the Students’ Union as much as possible
because of the friends you will meet, the skills you will gain and
the experiences you will have. We aim to provide a high-quality
entertainment programme in a safe, student friendly environment
that will offer something for everyone. The culmination of these
activities is in the spectacular summer ball we host at the end of
every academic year, when the entire campus is transformed into one
big party, with bands, discos, fairground attractions and
most importantly your friends – an experience not to be missed!
