Entry Criteria for English Language & Linguistics
In addition to the information contained on the
course information page, we also think it will help you if you know
a little more about the specific qualities we are looking for in a
prospective student when you apply. When reviewing applications we
grade the applications, Eligible, Good and Excellent based on their
match to our programme.
Qualifications
The minimum entry requirements for this course
are 200 - 260 UCAS
Tariff points plus 3 GCSEs at grade C or above to include
English Language.
Eligible candidates
will need to meet all of the essential criteria.
Good candidates will
meet and exceed the minimum criteria in terms of tariff points.
Excellent candidates
will meet and exceed all minimum criteria in terms of tariff points
and GCSE requirements.
Personal Statement
Essential criteria we are looking for
As well as a strong standard of written English,
we also look for the ability to demonstrate knowledge and
commitment to the subject (and languages in general). This can be
done in a variety of ways, for example, through previous study,
relevant work experience and wider reading.
Valued criteria we are looking for
Candidates can demonstrate a real enthusiasm for
the subject that goes beyond achieving good grades in exams.
Examples of this include further study (e.g. additional languages),
career plans and transferrable skills. Other extra-curricular
activities could include conference/lecture attendance (e.g.
English Language & Linguistics
Colloquium), being a member of appropriate societies,
subscribing to relevant journals/magazines and involvement
in overseas exchange programmes.

Good candidates will
meet the essential criteria and have some valued elements of the
other valued criteria.
Excellent candidates
will meet all essential criteria and be able to provide evidence
for each of the other valued criteria.
