York St John's success in national student satisfaction survey

De Grey Court

York St John University has risen 29 places in the National Student Survey (NSS) for 2011, gaining its highest score to date.

Following on from a recent Ofsted report which rated the University’s secondary and primary teaching programmes as outstanding and good, and figures showing that 90% of York St John graduates are in employment or further study six months after graduating, this latest positive commendation has been met with delight at York St John.

The survey, conducted by Ipsos MORI, asks final year undergraduate students to rate their experiences in a range of areas based on 22 questions. These include feedback and assessment, learning resources and personal development. This year York St John achieved a record 74% student response rate, which is higher than the national average of 65%. The results help the University identify areas of strength and weakness and plan its future development of teaching and learning.

York St John gained an overall student satisfaction score of 84%. Particularly high levels of overall satisfaction were achieved by Theology & Religious Studies at 97%, Psychology at 94%, and Teacher Training at 93%, which were amongst the highest in the country in these subjects.

Speaking in response to the NSS results announcement, Professor David Fleming Vice Chancellor of York St John University said:

“We are delighted to receive this vote of confidence from graduating students at York St John. As we continue to make substantial and sustained improvements on student satisfaction, this endorsement not only validates the emphasis that the University places on teaching and learning, but also highlights our efforts to ensure that our students receive an exceptional experience.

“Our application rate is up by 17.5% compared with this time last year which demonstrates that demand for our programmes remains high. We are not standing still and, amongst a range of other projects, are currently completing a £1.1 million investment in our learning resources centre for September which will deliver very high quality facilities for our returning and new students.”

The annual NSS, now in its seventh year, is the cornerstone of the UK’s independent quality assurance framework, and is designed to inform prospective students about what and where to study.
