Bridging the gap between psychology and business

Frances DoddYork St John University is launching a series of workshops during York Business Week to help local businesses become more efficient, effective and enjoyable.

Frances Dodd, Senior Lecturer at York St John and Chartered Psychologist in Business Psychology, has applied psychological theory to practical issues of the workplace and developed a series of workshops aimed at small and medium sized enterprises in York and the surrounding area.

The workshops, entitled The Psychological Advantage, will provide practical and enjoyable professional development in key areas of business. These include recruitment and selection, stress management, coaching and mentoring, building your team, time management, and presentation skills. The success of these workshops is that they will focus on individuals, so all delegates will leave with personalised action plans.

In Yorkshire, one in six people are self-employed and over 70 per cent of businesses employ on average 10 people. Frances believes that these small businesses are critical to the economic success of Yorkshire, yet they have limited resources and support to help them achieve sustained growth.

Frances said:

“Practice and theory go hand in hand and this is the basis of my workshops. In light of the government’s push for the start up of new enterprises, there is more demand than ever to meet the needs of growing businesses. This is particularly relevant as the harsh reality is that four out of five start-up enterprises fail. The Psychological Advantage workshops will be practical, informative and relevant to the local business community.”

The workshops start in January 2012, but bookings are being taken now. Frances will be at the York Business Week ‘Creating Opportunities’ event, organised by Higher York at York St John University on Monday 14 November, from 4.30pm until 7.30pm. Discounts on workshops will be available to those who book at the Business Week event. For more information, please visit www.yorksj.ac.uk/businesspsychology
