Our sports facilities

The University has a range of sports facilities either on-site or within easy reach of our city centre campus. The sports performance area is a four-badminton court sports hall situated in the Foss Building. It caters for all the usual sports you would expect such as netball, volleyball, basketball, cricket, badminton and five-a-side football and it also has a climbing wall. Within easy walking distance you'll find our flood-lit, all-weather pitch - a sand-based, full-sized hockey pitch that can also accommodate a range of outdoor sports including football. Alongside the pitch is a netball court. At our Hull Road Sports Ground we have three grass football pitches and a new changing pavilion.

Health and fitness programme

Our health and fitness programme offers a great range of health and fitness classes throughout the academic year. Classes are led by fully qualified fitness instructors and are designed for all abilities on a pay-and-play basis. So whether it's the buzz of an aerotone or circuit class or simply a longing to recharge mind, body and soul through our yoga classes, then look no further!

During the year we also offer a range of health and wellbeing courses that offer a progressive and more in-depth approach to keeping you fit, happy and healthy. So if you're thinking of making a fresh start when you arrive at University then come and have a go - some of our past courses have included T'ai Chi and basic massage.

Our fully-equipped fitness and conditioning suite provides a great combination of cardiovascular, fixed and free weights. During term time the suite is open seven days a week and is staffed by fully qualified gym instructors who are on hand to provide advice and guidance that allows you to get the most out of your workout.

Sports and societies programme

If you're looking for team spirit, healthy competition, great activities and nights out, then there is a fantastic range of over 40 Students' Union sports clubs to choose from. There's a vibrant mix from the traditional to the extreme, offering great opportunities for all standards of players. Some of the largest clubs are football, rowing and hockey, which have over 100 members each. The majority of our sports clubs play in the local York leagues and represent the University in National BUCS competitions. Other recreational clubs include cheerleading, trampolining and even ski and snowboarding, so there's plenty of choice if you're up for some adventure!

Coach education and community volunteer programme

If you are contemplating a career in sports coaching, sports development or teaching, our coach education and community volunteer programme will give you a valuable head start by offering you the opportunity to gain vocationally relevant qualifications and coaching experience whilst at University. Each year we offer a range of nationally recognised courses, including National Governing Body awards, Sport Coach UK workshops and first aid courses. We'll also provide you with support so that you can combine these awards with some real coaching and development experience in York and North Yorkshire - a great way to enhance your CV and to put your newly found skills into action.

Sports scholarships and performance support

Each year our SPARK scholarship programme offers one scholarship of £500 to a student who is able to demonstrate the ability to compete at a regional level (or higher) through selection to county standard squads or similar, but may be facing barriers to performance which a small scholarship could help to remove. Our SPARK sports scholars also receive free membership of the fitness and conditioning suite. Applications are considered in November of each year. Further details are available from the Welfare Team: E: money@yorksj.ac.uk or T: 01904 876939.

York St John is an Academic Partner Institution for the national Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, known as TASS. This means that we work with the regional lead institution in supporting our talented sports students. To be eligible, all student athletes must be nominated each year by their National Governing Body (NGB) in order to receive an annual scholarship. In the first instance, we would recommend you contact your regional NGB representative for further information or visit the TASS website

For those seeking to develop levels of athletic performance, the YSJ Active staff are qualified and experienced in sport and exercise science. So if you are looking to get into serious competition or for help to achieve your first marathon, come and get some professional advice in the sports science laboratories. Such support can include nutritional advice, sport psychology, physiological testing and strength and conditioning.

At the heart of community sport in York and North Yorkshire

At York St John we are committed to making a difference and that's why many of our staff and students are actively involved in helping to develop sport within the community. Staff have great links with key local and regional sports organisations, including Sport England, Sports Coach UK and BASES. The University also plays a strategic role in Active York - the City's Community Sports Network - and North Yorkshire Sport, our County Sports Partnership.
