Work-based learning
Practice placements are an essential part of
all undergraduate programmes delivered within the faculty. We
utilise our links with local, national and international employers
and partners to ensure that every student has quality assured
placements that provide the relevant learning opportunities to put
into practice knowledge and skills gained during the academic
programme. There is a dedicated team of administrators and
academics who prepare, support and guide students through the
placement process in all subject areas.
There are opportunities for students to go on
established international placements. The placements include
Botswana, Uganda, Swaziland, Tanzania, South Africa, Bangladesh,
India, Seychelles, Sweden, Norway and Bulgaria. International
placements outside of Europe are self-funded but there is support
and advice on fund raising available.

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy undergraduates will spend a third of their programme out on professional placements in blocks of 5 to 10 weeks. Every student is under the supervision of a qualified therapist who has normally completed a Professional Practice Educators Course. Placements are assessed and are an essential component of the programme. Student placements are provided across the region in a variety of facilities, such as hospitals, private practice, GP clinics, schools, voluntary sector and community settings

Sport undergraduates are required to complete a minimum of 90 hours of placement over their programme. Students will be allocated sport related placements within York city in a variety of facilities, such as schools, sports clubs, health clubs, local branches of national organisations and council departments as well as having the opportunity to identify their own placement in level three. Every student is assigned a mentor and placements are assessed by the academic work produced by the student.

Psychology undergraduates are expected to complete a minimum of120 hours of placement. Students who choose to undertake their work placements in the UK gain invaluable experience in a variety of settings including local schools and nurseries, hospitals, charities, mental health care providers, research departments in Universities and Human Resources. All students have an identified mentor and placements are assessed by the academic work produced by the student.

Counselling, Mentoring and Coaching undergraduates are expected to complete a minimum of120 hours of placement over their three year programme. Students are encouraged to research and secure their own placements in order to offer students a range of transferable skills for informing their CV and employability profile. Placements are only assessed by the academic work produced by the student afterwards.
Counselling and Psychotherapy PG Diploma students will spend 150 hours on supervised practice placements during their programme from an approved list. Every student is under the supervision of a university-approved supervisor. Placements are assessed and form a key part of the learning and development experience.

- active involvement in multi-disciplinary
teams
- working in real situations
- learning by doing whilst working with
patients/clients
- applying theory in practice
