Welcome from the Dean

Whether you are a potential first time
undergraduate or postgraduate student, parent of a student, or
someone thinking of returning to learning or engaging in continuing
professional development, we wish you a warm welcome to the Faculty
of Health and Life Sciences. If you are an employer or partner
we already link with, or a new business looking for fresh thinking,
perhaps from a student internship, then we hope you also find these
webpages useful. We understand that acquiring the skills for
employment is a key aspiration for UK and International students
and the experience we offer is exceptional in the way we prepare
each individual for their chosen career. We play a key role in the
local and regional community and our links with employers and
partners are wide ranging to enable you to benefit from work
experience as part of every programme. All our programmes offer
added value, be it accreditation from recognised professional
bodies or the opportunity to engage in additional vocational
qualifications, International visits or volunteering.
In the subject areas of occupational therapy
and physiotherapy, our programmes are delivered in partnership with
the NHS and other health and social care providers. Health Students
will work out in practice, as part of the team, with support from
senior practitioners and lecturers and there is the opportunity to
do an International placement. In the field of sport, we will
enable you to work with individuals and organisations to experience
the inclusive, community focused approach to sport that makes the
York St John sport experience distinctive. If you are interested in
psychology, our BPS accredited programme has a strong emphasis on
the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to become an exceptional
psychology graduate, ready to enter the world of work or further
study. As a counselling student, you will get a unique opportunity
to work alongside experienced practitioners to develop either
your undergraduate skills in counselling, coaching and
mentoring, or your specialist postgraduate counselling and
psychotherapy skills to prepare you for BACP accreditation.
Our taught postgraduate and continuing
professional development programmes offer an opportunity to
interact with others from across a range of professional
disciplines, yet still focus on specialist learning needed for your
specific award. The Faculty research portfolio supports MPhil and
PhD programmes, supervised by staff who are National and
International active researchers and experts in their field.
Through collaborative research with stakeholders we develop the
knowledge base of the Faculty's subject areas and contribute to
national and international guidance and policy.
Therefore, with the added advantage of
learning and practising in a Faculty where research is integrated
into our internationalised programmes, you can look forward to
becoming part of a vibrant culture of exceptional learning and
teaching.
