York St John University Equality information 2012
Introduction
At York St John we are proud of our reputation as a university
that encourages students and staff to flourish in an inclusive,
accessible and friendly environment. Every day across campus
we make real the commitment in our mission statement “to the
provision of excellent, open and progressive higher education that
embraces difference, challenges prejudice and promotes justice” in
practical ways that enhance the experience of our diverse student
and staff communities.
The challenges that we have set ourselves to improve the student
experience and increase the number of students, including
international students, who choose to come to York St John mean
that now, even more than ever, it is important that we are
confident of our understanding of equality and diversity issues and
our skill in creating an environment where everyone feels welcome
and where individual needs are recognised and addressed.
This report outlines some of the action that we have taken to
advance equality and diversity best practice across the University
and contains key statistics relating to our students and staff
profiles.
The University has taken an integrated
approach to the development of our equality objectives, embedding
them within our corporate strategies. Our key equality
objectives can be found in the ‘Our Approach’ section below,
together with a link to our corporate strategies for 2012 –
2015. The information published in these Equality and
Diversity web pages will be updated annually and will provide the
basis for evaluating the progress we have made towards our current
equality objectives and identifying our priorities for the coming
years.
