Counselling and Wellbeing Team

CounsellingWelcome to York St John University's Counselling and Wellbeing Team pages. Our aim is to help students with a variety of challenging circumstances. During your University career there may times when you need a little extra support. There are many issues that counsellors can help with: feeling anxious, suffering from panic attacks, struggling with depression or worried about self-esteem, amongst many others.

Often, it helps to talk to someone who is not directly involved in the issue and so can remain neutral. Our aim is to be understanding about the issues you bring and the feelings you have about them.

The Team, alongside other advisers within the Holgate Centre, are also committed to promoting good emotional well-being within the University. We would like to think that coming to see a counsellor is not seen as being ‘weak’. We would rather see it as an opportunity to talk confidentially about matters that can affect your ability to get the most from your time here at University.

Talking through an issue can bring great relief and enable you to make changes in your life. It also can be helpful to talk about things that may not be easily changed but nevertheless might be manageable through a range of strategies.

The Team also facilitate a range of workshops throughout the year and is also piloting the use of e-mail counselling as a new way to reach the student population.

Remember, whatever the issue we are here to support you. If we are unable to be directly involved we can signpost you to the people who can help.
